History of the Göttingen Medical Classics Collection
The Göttingen State and University Library was founded in 1734 by George II, Margrave of Hanover, who donated his collection, but hyperinflation after World War I resulted in the sale of some of the books. With the support of Magosaburo Ohara, the founder of Kurashiki Central Hospital, Gito Teruoka, the director of the Kurashiki Institute for Science of Labour, who was in Germany at the time, purchased the collection and brought it back to Kurashiki in 1923. The institute and collection were moved to Tokyo in 1923, but the collection was returned to Kurashiki in 1999 for the 75th anniversary of Kurashiki Central Hospital.
The digitization and public access of the Göttingen Medical Classics Collection is under the direction of Professor Tatsuo Sakai, Department of Anatomy and Life Structure, Juntendo University Faculty of Medicine and Vice President of the Japanese Society for the History of Medicine.
